Propensity Score-matched Analysis Comparing Robotic Versus Laparoscopic Minor Liver Resections of the Anterolateral Multicenter Study of 10,517 Cases.DOI 10.1097SLA.0000000000006

Liver surgery is often needed to remove tumors or damaged tissue. Today, many of these surgeries are done using minimally invasive techniques. Two common options are laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery.

A large international study looked at more than 10,000 patients to compare these two methods.

The findings are helpful for patients planning surgery.

Robotic surgery showed some advantages.

Patients who had robotic surgery had less blood loss during the operation. Fewer patients needed blood transfusions. Serious complications were also slightly lower.

There was another benefit.

Robotic surgery had a lower chance of needing to switch to open surgery. This means the procedure was more likely to stay minimally invasive.

Recovery was also a bit faster. Patients who had robotic surgery went home about one day earlier on average.

But there is a small trade-off.

Patients who had robotic surgery had a slightly higher chance of being readmitted to the hospital within 30 days.

What does this mean for you?

Both robotic and laparoscopic surgeries are safe and effective. The differences between them are small but may matter in certain cases.

Robotic surgery may offer:

⦿ Better precision

⦿ Less blood loss

⦿ Faster recovery

Laparoscopic surgery remains a strong and widely available option.

The best choice depends on:

⦿ Your liver condition

⦿ Surgeon experience

⦿ Hospital facilities

If you are advised liver surgery, discuss both options with your doctor. Understanding the benefits and risks helps you make a confident decision.
