For early endometrial (uterine) cancer, large trials have shown that laparoscopic or robotic hysterectomy gives the same cancer control as open surgery, with less pain, less blood loss, fewer wound infections and a shorter hospital stay. It is particularly helpful for women with obesity or diabetes, in whom large open wounds heal poorly.

The risks are those of any hysterectomy: bleeding, infection, injury to the bladder, ureter or bowel, blood clots and, occasionally, the need to convert to open surgery. The stitched end of the vagina (the vaginal vault) can rarely open during healing, so intercourse and heavy lifting are avoided for about 6 to 8 weeks. The standard operation is a total hysterectomy with removal of both ovaries and fallopian tubes, together with sentinel lymph node mapping or lymph node removal depending on the stage and type of tumour. Most women walk the same evening or the next morning and go home in 1 to 3 days. Light daily activities resume in 1 to 2 weeks, and most women return to desk work in 3 to 4 weeks.
