Ultrasound Imaging Features Associated With Neoplastic Gallbladder Polyps A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.DOI 10.3348kjr.2025.1126

Gallbladder polyps are small growths inside the gallbladder. Most of them are harmless. Many people find out about them during an ultrasound done for other reasons.Still, a small number of these polyps can turn into cancer or may already be cancerous.

Knowing which ones are risky is very important.A large study looked at nearly 9,000 patients to find warning signs on ultrasound. The findings help patients and doctors make better decisions.Certain features on ultrasound were linked to higher risk.

Polyps larger than 10 mm were more likely to be serious. Size is one of the strongest warning signs.Shape also matters.

Flat or broad-based polyps (called sessile) had a higher risk.Single polyps were more concerning than multiple small ones. If gallstones were also present, the risk increased.

Other signs included:
⦿ Thickened gallbladder wall
⦿ Reduced brightness on ultrasound
⦿ Irregular internal appearance
⦿ Blood flow inside the polyp

These features may suggest that the polyp is not simple.
What does this mean for you?If your ultrasound shows a small polyp without these features, doctors may just monitor it.

This helps prevent cancer. Key steps to follow:

⦿ Do regular follow-up scans

⦿ Ask about the size and features of your polyp

⦿ Report any symptoms like pain or discomfort

⦿ Follow your doctor’s advice on treatment

Early detection and monitoring can prevent serious complications.
