The impact of ERAS protocols on postoperative outcomes in robotic, laparoscopic, and open colorectal surgery A multicenter retrospective.DOI 10.1016j.amjsurg.2025.116679

Colorectal surgery can be done in different ways—through open surgery, laparoscopy (keyhole), or robotic tools. No matter the technique, recovery is always important. Doctors now use something called ERAS—Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. It’s a special care plan to help patients feel better sooner.

This study looked at over 5,500 people who had colorectal surgery. It found that patients who followed an ERAS plan left the hospital sooner. On average, people who had robotic surgery and followed ERAS went home three days earlier than those who didn’t.

People in the ERAS group also had fewer complications and fewer leaks where the bowel was reconnected. These are important improvements that can keep patients safe and reduce time in the hospital.

The biggest benefits of ERAS were seen in patients who had robotic surgery, but the plan helped people in all surgery types. It didn’t make a big difference in how many total problems someone had (called the CCI), but it clearly helped speed up recovery and lower the risk of serious issues.

This research shows that using an ERAS plan can make a big difference in healing after colorectal surgery. Patients can talk to their care team about using ERAS for a smoother, safer recovery.
