For men with prostate cancer, surgery is one of the main treatment options. A new study from Taiwan shows that robot-assisted surgery may be the safest way to go.

Researchers looked at nearly 5,000 men who had prostate cancer surgery between 2018 and 2021. Most had robot-assisted surgery, while smaller numbers had open or standard laparoscopic surgery.

The results were clear: men who had robot-assisted surgery needed fewer blood transfusions, stayed in the hospital for a shorter time, and were less likely to be admitted to the ICU. They also had fewer complications during and after surgery.

Robot-assisted surgery uses small instruments and a camera controlled by the surgeon. This allows for more precise movements and less damage to surrounding tissue.

While all surgery comes with risks, this study suggests that robot-assisted surgery may help men recover faster and more safely.

If you’re facing prostate cancer surgery, ask your doctor if robot-assisted surgery is available and right for you.
