Electroacupuncture Helps the Gut Recover Faster After Stomach Cancer Surgery

Patients who undergo stomach cancer surgery often face a common problem called postoperative ileus. This means the bowel takes a long time to “wake up” after surgery. It can cause bloating, discomfort, and delays in eating normally. A new study tested whether electroacupuncture could help the gut recover more quickly.

The study was carried out in 7 hospitals in China. More than 580 patients who had laparoscopic surgery for stomach cancer took part. They were divided into three groups. One group received electroacupuncture, another group received a “sham” treatment that looked like acupuncture but was not real, and the third group received only standard medical care.

The results showed that patients who had electroacupuncture passed gas and had their first bowel movement much earlier than those in the other two groups. On average, their recovery was about a day faster. They were also less likely to have prolonged bowel problems after surgery. Importantly, no serious side effects were reported from the treatment.

This research suggests that electroacupuncture may be a safe and helpful option for patients recovering from stomach cancer surgery. Faster recovery of bowel function can mean less discomfort and a quicker return to eating and moving around. Patients interested in this option should talk to their doctors to see if it is available and suitable for them.
