Short-term outcomes of robotic versus laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer A systematic review and meta-analysis. DOI- 10.1016j.surg.2025.109662

For some rectal cancer patients, part of the treatment involves a surgery called abdominoperineal resection, which removes the lower part of the rectum and anus. This study compared two common approaches: traditional laparoscopic surgery and newer robot-assisted surgery.

Researchers reviewed data from over 7,000 patients. They found that robotic surgery had several short-term advantages:

⦿ Fewer patients needed to switch to open surgery during the procedure
⦿ Less blood was lost during surgery
⦿ Fewer complications happened after surgery
⦿ Tumors were less likely to have cancer cells at the edges, which improves the chances of full removal

The time spent in the operating room was a little longer with robotic surgery. But both methods had similar hospital stays and costs.

These results suggest that robotic surgery can offer a safer, more precise operation, especially in complex rectal cancer cases.

If you’re considering surgery for rectal cancer, talk to your doctor about whether robot-assisted surgery might be a better option for you.
