Body mass index and colorectal cancer recurrence and mortality A nationwide cohort study in Denmark.DOI 10.1002ijc.70248

Many people believe that being overweight always worsens cancer outcomes. A new large study looked closely at this in patients with colorectal cancer.

The study followed thousands of patients after surgery for colon and rectal cancer. It tracked cancer recurrence and survival over time.

The findings are interesting.

Body weight did not affect the chances of cancer coming back. Patients with higher or lower weight had similar recurrence rates.

But survival told a different story.

Patients who were underweight had a higher risk of death. Patients with severe obesity also had a higher risk. This was more noticeable in rectal cancer.

Some groups were at even higher risk:

⦿ Younger patients

⦿ Men

⦿ People with other health problems

⦿ Those who smoke or consume alcohol

This shows that weight alone is not the full picture. Other health and lifestyle factors play a big role.

What does this mean for you?

Maintaining a healthy weight is still important, but extremes should be avoided. Being too thin or severely overweight can affect recovery and survival.

Simple steps can help:

⦿ Aim for a balanced, healthy weight

⦿ Eat nutritious meals

⦿ Stay physically active

⦿ Avoid smoking and limit alcohol

⦿ Manage other health conditions

Regular follow-up after cancer treatment is essential. Doctors can guide you on diet, activity, and lifestyle changes.

Your overall health matters as much as your cancer treatment. Small changes can improve long-term outcomes and quality of life.
