Association between cervical conization and pregnancy outcomes A nationwide population-based cohort study.DOI 10.1371journal.pone.0341660

Cervical conization is a common procedure used to treat precancerous changes in the cervix, often caused by HPV infection.

The surgery removes a small cone-shaped piece of cervical tissue to prevent cervical cancer from developing. While it is an effective treatment, doctors have been studying how it may affect future pregnancies.

A large nationwide study from Korea followed nearly 200,000 women who had their first pregnancy. About 18,600 women had undergone cervical conization before becoming pregnant.

The study found that women who previously had this procedure had a higher risk of certain pregnancy complications. These included:
⦿ Cervical weakness (cervical incompetence).
⦿ Preterm labor.
⦿ Premature rupture of membranes (water breaking early).
⦿Placenta previa.
⦿Gestational diabetes.
⦿ Slower growth of the baby in the womb.

The risk of premature birth-related complications was particularly higher in women who needed a cerclage, a stitch placed in the cervix during pregnancy to help keep it closed.

Although these risks are higher, many women who have had cervical conization still go on to have healthy pregnancies. The study highlights the importance of careful prenatal monitoring and specialized care for women with a history of cervical surgery.

If you have had cervical conization and are planning a pregnancy, discussing your history with your doctor can help ensure the right monitoring and support throughout your pregnancy.
