Parastomal hernias can happen after a stoma is made. They cause a bulge near the stoma and can be painful or make life harder. Surgery is often needed to fix them. But which surgery works best and is safest?

A new study looked at different ways doctors repair these hernias. Researchers compared seven surgery types by studying results from almost 2,000 patients. They wanted to find which methods stop the hernia from coming back and which ones cause the fewest problems.

One method, called FunnelMesh, was best at stopping the hernia from coming back. Another method, called Sandwich, also did well. For safety, a method called Modified Keyhole caused the fewest problems after surgery. This method had fewer infections and other side effects.

The study also showed that the old Keyhole technique did not work well. Patients who had that type of repair were more likely to have the hernia return or have complications. Experts say this method should not be used anymore.

If you or a loved one needs parastomal hernia surgery, this research can help you and your doctor choose the best and safest option. Ask your surgeon if they use the newer methods, like FunnelMesh or Modified Keyhole. Choosing the right surgery may help you heal faster and avoid another hernia later.
