When ovarian cancer comes back after treatment, doctors often consider surgery again. A new study looked at whether adding a special type of heated chemotherapy—called HIPEC—during that second surgery could help women live longer.

Researchers analyzed data from seven studies including over 1,100 women with platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer. About half had surgery alone, and the other half had surgery plus HIPEC.

Women who received HIPEC during surgery lived longer overall compared to those who only had surgery. But the time before the cancer came back (progression-free survival) was about the same in both groups.

The good news: serious complications were not much higher with HIPEC. But there were slightly more cases of kidney problems and anemia in the HIPEC group, which doctors will need to watch for.

HIPEC is not standard everywhere, and it may not be right for every woman. But this study shows it could offer real hope for extending life in certain patients.

If your ovarian cancer has come back, ask your doctor if surgery with HIPEC is an option for you.
