Estimating global prevalence of gallbladder stones in general population from 2000 to 2024- systematic review and meta-analysis DOI 10.108007853890.2025.2570795

Gallstones are very common. They affect the gallbladder, a small organ that helps digest fat. Gallstones can cause pain, infections, and other problems. A new study looked at how common gallstones are around the world between the years 2000 and 2024.

Researchers looked at results from 139 studies, covering many countries. They found that about 1 in every 20 people worldwide has gallstones. That’s nearly 6 out of every 100 people.

Gallstones were much more common in some places than others. In Uganda, about 22% of people had them. In Australia, only about 0.2% had them. The difference between countries was very large.

The study also found who is more likely to get gallstones. Older adults, women, people who are overweight, and those with a family history of gallstones were at higher risk. People with high blood pressure, diabetes, or fatty liver disease were also more likely to have gallstones.

Things like smoking, drinking alcohol, eating vegetables, or having high cholesterol did not seem to affect the risk much.

Gallstones can often go unnoticed. But if they cause pain, people may need surgery. Knowing how common they are can help doctors plan better care and help people stay healthy.
