Can C-Reactive Protein Levels Help Predict Outcomes in Bladder Cancer?

Doctors often use scans and biopsies to understand cancer. But a simple blood test might also give important clues. A new study shows that higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the blood could mean a worse outlook for people with bladder cancer.

CRP is a marker of inflammation. It’s usually measured in standard blood tests. This study looked at data from over 7,000 patients. It found that those with high CRP levels had lower chances of survival and were more likely to have their cancer come back or worsen.

The results were consistent: patients with high CRP had worse outcomes across different types of survival, including overall survival, cancer-specific survival, and progression-free survival.

What’s interesting is that CRP levels didn’t seem to be linked to tumor size, grade, or whether the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes. This means CRP could provide extra information beyond what scans or pathology reports show.

If you have bladder cancer, your CRP level might help your doctor better understand your risk and tailor your treatment plan.
