Metformin Doesn’t Help Men With Advanced Prostate Cancer Live Longer—but May Ease Side Effects

Metformin is a common diabetes drug, but researchers have wondered if it could also help treat prostate cancer. This study tested whether adding metformin to standard hormone therapy could improve survival for men with advanced prostate cancer.

Nearly 1,900 men from the UK and Switzerland took part. They all had metastatic prostate cancer and normal blood sugar levels. Half received standard treatments like hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and sometimes newer hormone-blocking pills. The other half got the same treatments plus metformin.

After about five years, survival rates were similar in both groups. Men who took metformin lived an average of 67 months, compared to 62 months for those who didn’t. This difference was not considered significant.

However, metformin did show some benefits. It reduced the common side effects of hormone therapy, such as weight gain, cholesterol problems, and blood sugar issues. These metabolic problems can increase the risk of heart disease over time.

The most common side effect from metformin was diarrhea, which was more frequent but manageable. Serious side effects were rare.

While metformin didn’t extend life for men with advanced prostate cancer, it may still help some patients feel better during treatment by reducing unwanted side effects.
