Oxaliplatin Chemotherapy May Not Benefit Older Patients With Colorectal Cancer

Chemotherapy after surgery helps prevent colorectal cancer from coming back. A common drug combination includes oxaliplatin, but it can cause nerve damage and other side effects. Doctors have questioned whether older patients gain the same survival benefit as younger patients.

A new study from Korea looked at more than 8,500 patients with stage II or III colorectal cancer who received chemotherapy after surgery. Researchers wanted to find the age cutoff where oxaliplatin is most helpful.

The results showed:
– For stage II colorectal cancer, oxaliplatin did not improve survival at any age.
– For stage III colorectal cancer, oxaliplatin helped patients up to age 70, improving 5-year survival to about 85% vs. 78% without oxaliplatin.
– For patients over 70, oxaliplatin did not improve survival and was linked to a higher chance of stopping chemotherapy early due to side effects.

This means oxaliplatin may be most beneficial for younger patients with stage III colorectal cancer, but less useful for older patients, who may face more risks than benefits.

Patients should talk with their oncologists about age, stage of cancer, and personal health when deciding whether oxaliplatin is the right choice for them.
