Receiving Cancer Care at One Center May Improve Survival in Rectal Cancer

Treating locally advanced rectal cancer usually requires several steps: chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. These treatments work best when carefully coordinated by a team of specialists. But some patients end up receiving care at different hospitals or treatment centers, a situation called care fragmentation.

A new study of more than 63,000 patients found that fragmented care was linked to shorter survival compared with patients who had all their treatments at the same hospital. Patients receiving fragmented care also experienced more treatment delays and were less likely to receive chemotherapy or radiation before surgery.

The impact was especially strong in certain groups:
– Women
– Patients with stage III disease
– People with Medicaid insurance
– Those living more than 100 miles from the hospital
– Patients treated at academic centers, but across multiple facilities

Patients treated at a single academic center had the best survival outcomes, suggesting that staying within one specialized hospital system can make a big difference.

These findings highlight the importance of coordinated, unified care for rectal cancer. Patients may benefit from asking whether their treatments can all be managed in one hospital or cancer center. For those who must travel long distances or rely on multiple facilities, additional support and coordination may help reduce risks.
