Regular Cystoscopy After Bladder Cancer Surgery Improves Survival

For people with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), the first treatment is usually surgery to remove the tumor, called transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TUR-BT). Because this cancer often comes back, patients need close follow-up with cystoscopy, a procedure that lets doctors look inside the bladder with a camera.

A nationwide study looked at more than 40,000 patients with NMIBC to see how cystoscopy after surgery affected long-term outcomes. Patients were divided into two groups: those who had a cystoscopy within 6 months of surgery, and those who did not.

The results showed:
– Patients who had a cystoscopy were more likely to have recurrences detected.
– But importantly, these patients had lower risks of cancer getting worse (progression), lower cancer-related deaths, and lower overall deaths compared with those who did not have early cystoscopy.

This means that while cystoscopy may find more small recurrences, it helps doctors treat them earlier, preventing the cancer from spreading or becoming life-threatening.

The study highlights the importance of regular cystoscopy follow-up after bladder cancer surgery. Skipping this follow-up may lead to missed opportunities for early treatment and worse outcomes.

Patients with bladder cancer should work with their doctors to make sure they receive cystoscopy within the recommended timeframe, usually within 3–6 months after surgery, and continue regular check-ups to stay on top of their cancer care.
