Assessment of new prognostic risk models for recurrence in patients with clinical stage I seminoma.DOI 10.1111bju.70041

Most men with early-stage seminoma, a common type of testicular cancer, are cured with surgery alone. But for some, the cancer returns months or years later.

Doctors are trying to find better ways to predict who is at higher risk.

A new study tested two prediction tools—called risk models—designed to spot men more likely to have their cancer return after surgery.

These tools were developed in Europe and look at features like tumor size and whether the cancer had spread into nearby tissue or vessels.

Researchers looked at 139 men who had surgery for stage I seminoma and no further treatment.

About 1 in 5 had their cancer return during follow-up. One feature—called “rete testis infiltration”—was linked to a higher chance of recurrence.

This means the cancer had spread into a specific part of the testicle.

Overall, the prediction models worked well, especially for low- and medium-risk patients. But more studies are needed to confirm how useful they are for high-risk patients.

These tools could help doctors decide who might need extra treatment and who can safely avoid it.
