Systematic review and meta-analysis of comparing open and robotic-assisted intracorporeal radical cystectomy based on randomized DOI- 10.1007s11701-025-02890-5

Bladder cancer surgery often means removing the bladder, a complex procedure known as radical cystectomy. A new study compared the traditional open surgery with a modern robotic option—and found both to be equally safe.

Researchers analyzed data from multiple clinical trials involving over 500 patients. They looked at outcomes from open radical cystectomy (ORC) and robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC), where all parts of the surgery, including the urinary reconstruction, are done inside the body using robotic tools.

The findings showed that robotic surgery took longer—about 74 minutes more on average. But in every other measure—blood loss, hospital stay, cancer removal success, and complication rates—the results were nearly the same.

This means that robotic surgery, though more time-consuming, offers similar safety and effectiveness. It’s less invasive, which may help with recovery for some patients.

If you’re facing bladder removal surgery, ask your doctor whether a robotic approach could be an option for you.
