Reliability of urological telesurgery compared with local surgery multicentre randomised controlled trial.DOI 10.1136bmj-2024-083588

Robotic surgery is already used for prostate and kidney cancer. A new study looked at a newer idea called telesurgery. This means the surgeon operates the robot from a different hospital, sometimes many hundreds of miles away. Many patients wonder if this is safe.

Researchers studied patients who needed robotic prostate or kidney surgery. The study took place in five hospitals. Some patients had surgery where the surgeon was in the same hospital. Others had telesurgery, where the surgeon controlled the robot from far away using a secure network.

The main question was simple. Did the surgery work just as well when done remotely?

The answer was yes. The success rate of telesurgery matched local surgery. Doctors reviewed each operation using clear rules. Telesurgery met the same standards. The difference between the two groups was very small and not meaningful.

The study also checked safety and recovery. Complications were similar in both groups. Blood loss, operation time, and early healing showed no clear differences. Cancer outcomes were also alike during early follow-up. Patients were checked again at four and six weeks after surgery, and recovery stayed on track.

Technology was another key focus. The telesurgery system stayed stable even when the surgeon was up to 2,800 kilometers away. Network delays were very short. Video quality remained clear. No major system failures were reported.

This research is reassuring for patients. It shows that telesurgery can be just as reliable as having the surgeon in the same room. This could help people living far from specialist centers. It may reduce travel stress and improve access to expert cancer care.

Patients thinking about robotic surgery can ask their care team if telesurgery is an option. Knowing that safety and results are similar can make treatment decisions easier and less stressful.
