Doctors wanted to see if a new recovery plan could help men go home sooner after prostate cancer surgery. The surgery they looked at was robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP), which removes the prostate using robotic tools.

This plan is called Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). It includes better pain control, faster nutrition, and quicker movement after surgery. Researchers studied 129 men. Some followed the ERAS plan, and others had standard care.

The good news is, men on the ERAS plan were able to move around on their own faster—about 5 hours sooner. Moving early helps lower the risk of complications like blood clots.

But the ERAS plan didn’t help men leave the hospital any earlier. Both groups stayed around 43 hours. The new plan also didn’t change when men could start eating again, their rate of post-surgery problems, or how they felt overall during recovery.

Doctors say this might be because today’s surgeries are already very safe. With skilled surgeons and good hospital care, there’s less room for improvement.

If you’re having robotic prostate surgery, ask your doctor about recovery plans. Moving soon after surgery is still helpful, even if it doesn’t shorten your hospital stay.
