Electroacupuncture Helps Men Regain Bladder Control After Prostate Surgery

Many men experience urine leakage after prostate surgery, a problem known as urinary incontinence. It can be distressing and affect daily life, yet few simple treatments exist. A new clinical trial from China found that electroacupuncture may help men recover bladder control faster after surgery.

The study included 110 men who had robotic prostate surgery for prostate cancer. All of them had urinary leakage a few weeks after surgery. The men were randomly divided into two groups—one received real electroacupuncture, and the other received sham treatment that looked similar but did not use real needle stimulation.

Those in the electroacupuncture group had 30-minute sessions three times a week for six weeks. Thin needles were placed at specific points near the lower back and hips and connected to mild electrical pulses.

After six weeks, 44% of men in the electroacupuncture group regained bladder control, compared with only 22% in the control group. This means men receiving electroacupuncture were twice as likely to recover continence. The treatment was safe and well-tolerated, with no major side effects reported.

These results show that electroacupuncture can speed up recovery after prostate surgery and may be a useful part of rehabilitation. It offers men a noninvasive, drug-free way to reduce urine leakage and regain confidence sooner after treatment.
