Comparison of Single- and Multiport Robot-assisted Approaches in Prostate and Renal Surgery A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.DOI 10.1016j.eururo.2025.08.010

If you’re facing prostate or kidney surgery, you may hear your doctor talk about “single-port” (SP) or “multi-port” (MP) robotic surgery. This study looked at both techniques to see which one helps people recover better and stay healthier after surgery.

In SP surgery, doctors use just one small opening in the body to do the operation. MP surgery uses several. Both use robotic tools to help the surgeon be more precise.

This study looked at 26 reports on prostate and kidney surgeries. People who had SP surgery for prostate cancer lost less blood, had less pain, and left the hospital sooner. For simple prostate surgery, patients who had the MP method needed more morphine for pain. For kidney surgery, SP patients also had less pain and shorter stays in the hospital—but the kidney was without blood flow longer, which doctors try to avoid.

Cancer control was similar for both methods. That means SP surgery is just as good as MP surgery at removing the cancer. The results suggest SP surgery may help people feel better faster with the same success in cancer treatment.

There were some differences in how the surgeries were done in each study. So we still need more high-quality research to be sure.

If you are planning surgery, ask your doctor if SP surgery is right for you.
