Real-world comparison of cabozantinib and sunitinib in advanced non-clear cell renal cell carcinoma A multicenter study by the Turkish Oncology Group.DOI 10.1002ijc.70165

Kidney cancer is not always the same. Most cases are called clear cell renal cancer, but some patients develop a rarer type known as non-clear cell renal cell carcinoma (nccRCC). Because this form is uncommon, doctors still lack clear guidance about the best first treatment.

A large study from cancer centers across Turkey examined real-world outcomes of two commonly used medicines: cabozantinib and sunitinib. Researchers reviewed records of 268 patients with advanced or metastatic nccRCC who received one of these drugs as their first treatment.

The results showed that patients treated with cabozantinib had longer disease control. On average, the cancer remained stable for about 9.2 months with cabozantinib, compared with 6.6 months with sunitinib. Doctors call this measure progression-free survival, which means how long the cancer stays from growing or spreading.

More patients also responded to cabozantinib treatment. Around 39% of patients saw their tumors shrink, compared with about 26% of patients using sunitinib.

The overall survival time was similar between the two treatments. Researchers noted that survival was strongly affected by factors like general health, cancer subtype, and whether surgery had been performed earlier.

These findings suggest that cabozantinib may help control non-clear cell kidney cancer more effectively in many patients. Since this type of cancer is rare, studies like this provide valuable guidance for doctors and patients deciding on treatment.

More research will still be needed to confirm the best treatment strategy for this uncommon form of kidney cancer.
