Prophylactic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy with Platinum Agents Following Curative Resection for Colorectal Cancer A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.DOI 10.1245s10434-025-18903-4

Colon cancer surgery can remove the tumor completely. Still, there is a risk that cancer may come back, especially in the abdomen lining. This is called peritoneal recurrence. Doctors are looking for ways to lower this risk.

A new study explored a treatment called intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This means giving chemotherapy directly inside the abdomen during or after surgery. The drugs used were platinum-based, which are commonly used in cancer care.

Researchers analyzed several studies involving more than 1,200 patients. They compared patients who received this treatment with those who had standard care.

The results showed a clear benefit. Patients who received this targeted chemotherapy had a longer period without cancer coming back. This is called disease-free survival. It means more time living without signs of cancer.

There was also a trend toward better overall survival. This means patients may live longer, though more research is needed to confirm this.

Importantly, the treatment did not increase serious side effects. The risk of major complications remained similar to standard treatment.

What does this mean for patients?

If you are having surgery for colon cancer, this approach may offer extra protection against recurrence. It targets cancer cells that may be left behind in the abdomen.

This treatment is still being studied. It may not be available everywhere. Doctors are working to find the best way to use it and which patients benefit most.

Talk to your doctor about your risk of recurrence. Ask if additional treatments like intraperitoneal chemotherapy are suitable for you.

This study offers hope. A more targeted approach during surgery may help keep cancer from coming back and improve long-term outcomes.
