Robotic Surgery May Offer Faster Recovery for Stomach Cancer Patients

A new study comparing robotic and laparoscopic surgery for stomach cancer shows that robotic surgery may help patients heal faster and with fewer complications.

Researchers reviewed six clinical trials involving over 1,000 patients across Asia. They compared two minimally invasive procedures: robotic gastrectomy (RG) and laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG). Both methods are used to remove part or all of the stomach in people with gastric cancer.

The results showed that patients who had robotic surgery had several short-term advantages:
– Less blood loss during the operation
– More lymph nodes removed, which helps with cancer staging
– Shorter hospital stays
– Fewer complications after surgery
– Quicker return of bowel function and earlier ability to drink fluids

Importantly, both types of surgery were equally safe. There was no difference in how long the operations took, how soon patients could walk after surgery, or in the risk of death during or shortly after surgery.

Robotic surgery uses advanced tools that give surgeons better precision and control, which may explain the improved recovery.

If you’re planning surgery for stomach cancer, ask your doctor whether robotic surgery is an option for you. While it may not be available in all hospitals, it could lead to a smoother recovery.
