New Blood Test May Help Detect Stomach Cancer Early

A new study has developed a simple blood test that may help find stomach cancer early—possibly before symptoms begin. This could save lives by catching the disease when it’s still curable.

Stomach (gastric) cancer is one of the top causes of cancer deaths worldwide, mainly because it’s often found too late. Right now, the main way to detect it is through an endoscopy, which is invasive and expensive.

Researchers from Japan and South Korea worked together on a new test called Destinex. It looks for tiny particles in the blood called exosomes, which carry cancer-related signals. These signals include special molecules called microRNAs (miRNAs), which change when cancer is present.

In a study of nearly 500 patients, the Destinex test correctly identified early-stage stomach cancer in over 96% of cases. Even better, it could detect stage 1 cancer—when the chances of a cure are highest. The test also showed clear changes after surgery, proving it’s specific to cancer.

This blood test could become a safe, fast, and noninvasive way to screen people for stomach cancer, especially in countries where the disease is more common.

If you have a family history of stomach cancer or symptoms like long-term indigestion or weight loss, talk to your doctor. New blood tests like Destinex could soon offer earlier answers.
