Faster Recovery Plan After Stomach Cancer Surgery Improves Long-Term Survival

Stomach cancer surgery can be tough on the body. Doctors are always looking for ways to help patients recover faster and live longer. A new study looked at a program called Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) compared to regular hospital care.

More than 500 patients with stomach cancer from 13 hospitals in China took part in this trial. All patients had laparoscopic distal gastrectomy, which is a type of stomach surgery. Some patients were cared for under ERAS, while others had conventional care. ERAS usually includes things like earlier eating, quicker walking after surgery, better pain control, and fewer tubes and drains.

The results were encouraging. Patients in the ERAS group had fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and lower medical costs. Most importantly, survival rates were better. After three years, about 87 out of 100 patients in the ERAS group were still alive, compared to 80 out of 100 in the conventional care group. Patients with stage III stomach cancer benefited the most, showing higher survival and fewer recurrences of the disease.

This study shows that ERAS does more than just help patients recover faster in the short term. It may also improve long-term survival, especially for those with more advanced stomach cancer. Patients who are going to have stomach surgery should ask their care team if ERAS is available, as it could make a real difference in both recovery and survival.
