Improved 5-year survival with robot-assisted resection for locally advanced rectal cancer compared to laparoscopic and open surgery DOI- 10.1111codi.70278

Robotic surgery may offer a better future for people with rectal cancer. A new study from Japan looked at over 37,000 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. It compared three types of surgery: open surgery, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, and robot-assisted surgery.

The study found that patients who had robotic surgery lived longer and had fewer problems after their operation. About 94 out of 100 people who had robotic surgery were still alive after five years. This number was lower for laparoscopic surgery (86 out of 100) and even lower for open surgery (78 out of 100).

Robotic surgery also had fewer complications. Only 17% of people had problems after their operation. People who had robotic surgery spent fewer days in the hospital, recovered faster, and had the lowest chance of dying within 90 days of surgery.

Even the hospital costs were lower for robotic surgery. This may surprise many, as robotic surgery often seems more expensive at first.

This research shows that robotic surgery can be a safer and more effective choice for people with advanced rectal cancer. It could become the new standard treatment. Patients should speak with their cancer surgeon about whether robotic surgery is an option for them.
