Fatty liver disease is now the most common liver condition in the world. When it becomes more serious and causes inflammation and damage, it’s called MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis). It often happens in people with obesity or type 2 diabetes.

This new study looked at whether certain diabetes and weight-loss drugs, called GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), can help improve liver health in people with MASH. Researchers combined data from six major trials involving over 1,500 patients.

After 12 to 18 months of treatment, many people taking GLP-1RAs had no more signs of liver inflammation—and their liver scarring (fibrosis) didn’t get worse. In fact, some people showed healing of liver scarring without making the inflammation worse. These results were much better than those who took a placebo (a non-active pill).

GLP-1RAs also improved signs of damage seen under the microscope, like fat buildup, swelling, and irritation in the liver. Side effects were similar to those seen with placebo, and serious problems were rare.

This study gives new hope for treating MASH, especially in people who don’t yet have cirrhosis (severe liver scarring). If you have fatty liver disease, diabetes, or obesity, talk to your doctor about whether GLP-1RA medications might help your liver as well as your blood sugar and weight.
