Eating more plant-based foods may help protect you from liver cancer. A new study from Singapore followed over 63,000 people for almost 18 years. The results showed that people who ate a mostly plant-based diet had a lower risk of developing liver cancer, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Researchers looked at three types of diets:

⦿ A general plant-based diet (PDI)
⦿ A healthy plant-based diet (hPDI) with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts
⦿ An unhealthy plant-based diet (uPDI) with sugary drinks, fries, and sweets

People who scored high on the general and healthy plant-based diets had a lower chance of liver cancer. Those who ate more unhealthy plant foods didn’t see this benefit.

This was true for people with or without hepatitis B, a common liver infection that can raise the risk of liver cancer. So even if someone already has hepatitis B, eating healthy plant foods could still help lower their cancer risk.

Healthy plant-based diets include:

⦿ Leafy greens and colorful vegetables
⦿ Whole fruits

⦿ Beans and lentils
⦿ Whole grains like brown rice and oats
⦿ Nuts and seeds

Cutting back on red meat, sugary snacks, and processed food is also part of this diet.

The study was done in Singapore with Chinese adults, but the message is clear: eating more healthy plant foods may protect your liver.
