Previous Cancer Does Not Worsen Survival in Gastroesophageal Cancer

Lack of association between prior or concurrent malignancies and overall survival in gastroesophageal cancer evidence from a large European single-center cohort.DOI 10.1007s12094-025-04036-3

Many cancer clinical trials do not allow people who had cancer in the past to participate. Doctors often worry that a previous cancer could affect survival or treatment results. A new study suggests this may not be necessary for patients with gastroesophageal cancer.

Researchers studied 1,491 patients treated for cancers of the stomach or esophagus at a large European medical center. About 18% of the patients had another cancer diagnosis at some point in their lives—either before, at the same time as, or both before and during their gastroesophageal cancer diagnosis.

The results were reassuring. Having another cancer in the past did not reduce overall survival. In other words, patients with a history of cancer lived about as long as those who had never had cancer before.

Patients with previous cancers were often older and more likely to have a specific type of esophageal cancer called squamous cell cancer. Their tumors also tended to be found at earlier stages.

The findings suggest that cancer survivors should not automatically be excluded from clinical trials for gastroesophageal cancer. Including them could help expand access to new treatments and improve research.
This study highlights an important message: surviving one cancer does not necessarily mean worse outcomes if another cancer develops later.
