Association between relative fat mass and increased prevalence of gallstone disease in American adults A cross-sectional study.DOI 10.1097MD.0000000000047790

Gallstones are a common problem that can cause pain, nausea, and sometimes require surgery to remove the gallbladder.

Being overweight is known to increase the risk, but new research suggests that how body fat is measured may matter even more than weight alone.

This study looked at more than 15,000 adults in the United States to understand how body fat relates to gallstone disease. Researchers compared three common measurements:
⦿ BMI (Body Mass Index)

⦿ Waist circumference

⦿ Relative Fat Mass (RFM), a measure that estimates body fat more directly.

The results showed that higher body fat was strongly linked to gallstones, especially in women. For every increase in body fat measurement, the risk of gallstones increased significantly.

Among women with the highest RFM levels, the chance of having gallstones was about three times higher than those with the lowest levels.

Interestingly, RFM was a better predictor than BMI. This means that measuring body fat more accurately may help doctors identify people at higher risk of gallstones earlier.

The findings highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy body composition, not just focusing on body weight.

Regular exercise, balanced eating, and managing body fat levels can help lower the risk of gallstones and improve overall health.
