Impact of Obstructive Jaundice and Socioeconomic Determinants on Outcomes in Gallbladder Cancer A Prospective Cohort Study.DOI 10.1007s12029 025 01394 7

Gallbladder cancer is a serious disease, and when it’s caught late or not treated, it can be life-threatening.

A new study from North India shows that people with a condition called obstructive jaundice—and those living in poverty—often face big delays in starting treatment.

Obstructive jaundice happens when the bile ducts are blocked, causing yellowing of the skin and eyes.

In this study of over 1,400 patients, almost half had jaundice when they came to the hospital. More than half of those with jaundice never started treatment at all. Only 8% were able to have surgery to remove the cancer, compared to 29% of those without jaundice.

The study also found that people who couldn’t read or lived in rural areas were much more likely to miss out on care.

When cancer is already advanced or people don’t understand how or where to get help, they lose the chance for treatments that could save or extend their lives.

This shows why early detection, patient education, and local health support matter.

Helping people manage jaundice quickly and providing clear, affordable cancer care—especially in villages—could make a big difference.
