What is rectal cancer?

Rectal cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the cells of the rectum. The rectum is the last part of the large intestine, just before the anus. It often begins as abnormal growths called polyps, which can develop into cancer over time.

Symptoms of Rectal Cancer:

⦿ Changes in Bowel Movements: You might notice diarrhoea, constipation, or a change in how your stool looks, which lasts for more than a few days.

⦿ Blood in Stool: Seeing bright red or very dark blood in your stool could indicate rectal cancer.

⦿ Ongoing Stomach Discomfort: This could feel like cramps, gas, or pain in your abdomen.

⦿ Feeling Like You Can’t Empty Your Bowel: Even after going to the bathroom, you might feel like you still need to go, but it doesn’t help.

⦿ Feeling Very Weak or Tired: If you’re feeling unusually weak or tired without any clear reason, it could be a symptom.

⦿ Losing Weight Without Trying: If you’re losing weight and you don’t know why, it could be due to various health issues, including rectal cancer.

Rectal Cancer Removal Operation By
Dr. Harsh Shah

Low-anterior resection

If the rectal cancer is at least 3 cm away from the start of the anus, the surgeon can save the sphincter muscle, which controls bowel movements. They can then make a connection so that stool can pass out of the body in the normal way. This operation requires special tools called staplers and careful surgical skills. Sometimes, they can do a type of surgery called inter-sphincteric resection.

Abdomino-perineal resection

When the tumor is in the very lower part of the rectum, it's often not possible to save the anus. The surgeon will remove the tumor and the anus to stop cancer from coming back in that area. They will make an opening in the abdominal wall, called an end sigmoid colostomy, for poop to come out.

When a tumor has grown large enough to block the passage inside the intestine, the surgeon might have to do a surgery to reroute the stool temporarily. This operation is known as creating a stoma. It's generally done for a short period.
